Safety starts before the trail
Safe side-by-side
riding practices.
A great off-road day depends on preparation, properly used safety equipment, legal routes and decisions that match the terrain and your experience.
Before the ride
Plan for the place you are actually going.
Check the land manager's current closures, permits, maps and vehicle rules.
Inspect tires, wheels, restraints, doors, fluids and controls before departure.
Carry water, food, first aid, tools, recovery equipment and offline navigation.
Tell someone your planned route, group information and expected return time.
On the trail
Protect every person in the vehicle.
Every occupant wears a properly fitted DOT-approved helmet.
Keep every seat belt or safety harness fastened while the vehicle is moving.
Use only manufacturer-designed seats and keep arms and legs inside the vehicle.
Stay on legal routes, slow for blind corners and expect two-way traffic.
Never operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Drive within your skill level and the conditions—not the machine's maximum capability.
California ROV basics
Helmet. Restraint. Proper seat.
California State Parks states that ROV operators and passengers must wear DOT-approved helmets, use seat belts or safety harnesses, and occupy manufacturer-designed seating positions. Local land managers may impose additional rules.
